Paulette Leaphart Walks 1000 Miles Bare Chested to Embody Cancer 'Scar Story'
Paulette Leaphart, 49, is a cancer survivor who underwent a double mastectomy (you might recognizer her from the "Hope" section of Beyonce's new visual album "Lemonade"). She is now walking 1000 miles across country from Biloxi, Mississippi to Washington, DC, bare chested to augment the "pink" sanitized imagery of cancer. "I don't want to give them a pretty pink story, wrapped up in a pretty pink bow about breast cancer, because that's not what it is. This is it, across my chest; this is breast cancer," says Paulette, in the incredibly moving video for the Kickstarter campaign to fund "Scar Story," a documentary about her walk. Using her own body/story as a testament, Paulette is not only walking to change health policy—but to remind us that we all have scars, and we should not be ashamed of them. The video about her project, with epic quotes about reclaiming her own inherent beauty, will blow you away. If you can find your wallet, through the tears, there's still some time to back the Kickstarter.
