Detroit Style Skating

Detroit style skating is uniquely Motown, and Broadminded is fortunate to feature a duo act of TWO passionate skaters with deep roots in the community:

Patreze Brinkley has taught Detroit style skating at events around the globe, including Skate Love Barcelona in Spain and Rendez-vous in Paris, France. In 2022, she founded The Detroit Stylin' Skate Club, a 501c(3) nonprofit (DSSC). Patreze was taught how to skate as soon as she could walk, by her father, Yancie Brinkley—an advanced Detroit Style instructor in the late 1980s and early '90s—guiding her through the fundamentals of the sport. In 2021, Patreze returned to the skating scene, recognizing a void in the community's performance and competitive spirit. Through the Yancie Brinkley Tribute Show, Patreze reignited the community’s love for Detroit Style, inspiring a new generation of youth to get involved. By creating a safe, fun-filled, and creative environment, the DSSC has become a hub for skaters looking to hone their skills while celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Detroit Style rollerskating. Anjela Moore, vice president of the Detroit Stylin' Skate Club, has been skating for over 30 years. She has performed with the Smooth Rollers, created by Yancie Brinkley, and the Rockin Rollers, led by Eldon Brown and Donna Weaver. She was also featured on the TV show "Soul on Wheels," which aired in the early 90s. She's skated in parades across Southeastern Michigan, in West Virginia's Strawberry Festival, and in Detroit's Thanksgiving Day Parade. She loves skating, "because it is freedom for me to feel the music and flow with it," she said. "One thing about me is that I love to help people however I can."
