Tap Dance

Helen Burkett, known by her stage name Helen Pontani, has performed all across the country — and around the globe, starring in the Off-Broadway hit This Is Burlesque, with appearances on Conan, Gossip Girl, Queer Eye, and more! Now, we are beyond lucky to have this legendary performer back in the Detroit area, where she first embarked on her dance journey with tap, jazz, and ballet at a Dearborn dance studio. After high school, Helen enrolled in a nearby college to concentrate on modern dance, during which she discovered her love for the Alvin Ailey Dance Company. Captivated by the allure of New York City, she moved there to immerse herself in the vibrant dance scene at the Alvin Ailey Institute.

While Helen enjoyed her exploration of modern dance, she sensed that something was missing—specifically, the glitz of feathers and rhinestones. Motivated by her desire to connect with performers who shared her love for the enchanting allure of old Hollywood, she set out on a quest and co-founded the World Famous Pontani Sisters Dance Trio. For over a decade, Helen and her stage sisters toured the globe, spreading the message of glamour from the Coney Island boardwalk to the dazzling lights of Hollywood and beyond, becoming significant figures in the burlesque revival movement. During this time, Helen also began to focus more on her solo act, establishing tap dance as her signature style, earning her the nickname "the Tapping Tornado."

After many years on stage, Helen decided to share her passion for dance by teaching students of all ages. She created a Roaring ‘20s dance class that gained popularity nationwide. Recently, Helen chose to return to her roots in Detroit, seeking a simpler lifestyle and the opportunity to be closer to family. In a true Hallmark story, she met her Canadian husband and now divides her time between Windsor and Detroit, teaching, performing, and choreographing dance, baking beautiful bread, and continuing to spread the gospel of glamour.
